Elections Fall 2009
Zach
Elections have taken place and a new set of officers in currently going in place.
The new President of ASULUG is: .... Adam!
VP is Cory
Marketing is Cameron
Treasurer is Nadim.
Congrats to those who won and thanks everyone for voting.
We only had 25 votes.. which is unfortunate. That's about a 1/8th turn
out (25/191).
I'll be transitioning the club over in the next week or so with the
different people that the new officers will have to meet to complete
the transition.

InstallFest Fall Spring 2009
Zach
It's what you've all been waiting for: InstallFest Spring 2009.
We're back this year with an even better event! Last year's
InstallFest was a huge success, so will this semester's.
There will be a few changes this semester:
For one: OpenSolaris. This semester, we will also be working with
the OpenSolaris group on campus. We will be letting them in and
working alongside with them to install OpenSolaris as well as Linux if
needed. There will probably be a few presentations on the subject too.
So, let's be nice and help them out. OpenSolaris is cool anyway, so
it's good.
Second: This semester we get the Brickyard Artisan Court Lobby (BYAC
Lobby). It's better than a classroom because it's more out-in-the-open
and allows food and is bigger, but it's smaller than the MU (which was
all booked..oh well), which can be nice too. It's also ground floor,
no worrying about elevators or carrying stuff too far. We will also
have our own restrooms and extra classrooms if we need more space or
want to keep our options open.
Date: March 21st, 2009
Time: 9am - 5pm
Location: Brickyard Lobby 1st floor (7th and Mill)
Food: Pizza, snacks, drinks provided
Parking: Not Free (Brickyard basement) .. more on this later maybe.
The story:
We get the lobby of the brickyard, which is a fairly large area. For
those of you who know the brickyard fairly well, you also know there
are tall tables in there.. Don't worry, we're bringing out some other
tables, so there should be plenty of space, power, and net. Also, we
are allowed food anywhere in the lobby, so it should be ok (unlike
last time in the brickyard).
Parking is currently an issue. In the past, we had free parking at the
MU. the brickyard has a parking garage in the basement floor, which is
not free on Saturdays. I'm working with people to see if we can get
free/cheap parking, but it may not happen..
Also, we will be running until 5pm instead of the usual 7pm because
the Brickyard closes at 5pm.
Games:
Every semester games are a big part of the 'Fest. We will again be
featuring the MAME box. Anyone wanting to bring consoles or gaming
PC's are welcome too. I know last semester, several people brought
great boxes!
This semester, we are going to try and setup a Quake server at the
Fest for those who wish to play. We'll start it off with ioquake (open
source) and some free levels. We'll run it on one of the donated
servers and hope that it gets some response. Should be fun!
Presentations:
Have you done a cool project this last semester? Present about it!
This is your chance to share an idea with other people in the area.
I know some people have already started to talk about this. We'll have
a presentation or two from the OpenSolaris group. Anyone else is also
welcome to make presentations. Please signup by emailing me.
Everything is welcome.
Tables:
Last semester, we started a concept of "Tables" at the InstallFest.
It's like a booth at a convention, but smaller. If you have something
you want to show off or demonstrate, ask for a table. You can setup
your project / presentation there and show it off. It's like a
presentation.. but ad-hoc.
Volunteering:
It would be great to get a few people to signup for Volunteering. We
need help with setup / tear down / running tables / signing sheet.
We also need some installers. If you've installed Linux before and
feel confident helping other, Become a volunteer. We even have special
hats or something for volunteers to wear. (Right Natalie?)
Donations:
Last semester was a huge success for funding.
We pulled in the most donations in a long time and also had funding
from ASU. Combined, we were able to have a whole pile of prizes and
fun. This semester, we again have funding as well as help from the
OpenSolaris group, but we still need help. If you would like to donate
money / hardware / prizes / food etc to the InstallFest, that would be
great! More donations just help increase how great we can make it.
There will be a donation jar at the event too.
Bring your PC's and fun toys to the InstallFest and have some fun with Unix!
Come get Installed!

Poster Raid
Cameron
I have made three InstallFest posters for the LUG. There is one for gaming (LAN Party), one for Open Source Software, and another general InstallFest poster. These will be posted up around the ASU campus.
On Friday October 03 (this week), we will be having a Poster Raid. A group of us will meet at 4:00 in front of the MU (north side) and then spread out from there putting up posters all over campus. If you can help out, please do, we need as many volunteers as possible for this. Also, if you come, please consider printing out some of the posters I have linked to and bringing them with you, along with masking tape if you have any (. Most of the posters for this run will need to be printed by ASULUG officers and members, as the club does not have a way to get many printed by then. Color is not necessary (but it is nice), and please print one poster per page for the bulk of them (a few can be half-sheet with 2 posters per page, but those are not as useful).
There will be a follow-up Poster Raid sometime next week (I believe on Tuesday, Oct 07) but the time and meeting place for that one is not set in stone yet. The first one is more important though as it gives people time to make plans, so please think about going to that one (this Friday).
Summary: Poster Raid 4:00 PM Friday, October 03, 2008 in front of the MU. Please print and bring the posters below if you can.
The posters are modified from last year's version and are in .png format.

InstallFest Fall 2008
Zach
Hello Everyone,
It's that time of the year again, and the InstallFest has a date and location!
Last year's InstallFest was a big success with over 40 people showing up. Lets try and make this year better.
We will be meeting in the MU Arizona Ballroom once again (now that they have fixed it).
This will allow us to have lots of space, and lots of time. (Unlike last time where we got kicked out early)
Where: MU Arizona Ballroom (2nd floor)
Date: Saturday, October 11th, 2008
Time: 9AM - 7PM
Food: Pizza, snacks, and drinks will be provided as usual. Please Donate though.
Games:
I hope that, in light of recent interest in Gaming, that people will also consider this a GameFest and should feel completely free to play games and bring game servers.
In the past, we have had Wii, PS2/3, DDR, etc as well as MAME games and others. If you think you might want to bring one of these, reply and say so, so we can plan for it, and others will know.
If you have a MAME box or console you would like to bring, please do so in addition to the LUG MAME box.
Presentations:
Also, consider this an All Call for Presentations.
If you would like to make a presentation on Linux or other software, reply with a topic idea.
Last year, we had some awesome presentations. It would great to have just as many this time!
Volunteers:
If you feel confident helping people install Linux, or can help setup / tear down / run a prize table / sign in sheet, please email me.
Donations:
If you have anything you would like to donate (hardware, prizes, money) to try and make this InstallFest Awesome, then please email me.
Any and All help we can get will help bring in more exciting items including food and prizes, as well as fun things for people to play with.
A wonderful goal for all of us would be to have an abundance of resources avaliable for everyone. Help make this dream a reality.
Lets get a good list going of who's bringing what and what we will be doing there!
I'm excited, and I hope you guys are too. Hope to see you all there!
New additions to List
Zach
I have added several people to the List from last time we had an event. (Brickyard). If you signed up on the paper and didnt get added.. Please add yourself using the Mailing List page avaliable on the Left Menu.
Happy Hour on Friday
Zach
As you guys may know, we've been having a happy hour the Last Friday of every month. Lets keep with the tradition.
When: Friday August 29th 2008
Time: 7pm until whenever
Where: Boston's Pizza Link
Why: For fun.
See you all there!
Summer / New Fall
Zach
Hello Everyone.
There will be a happy hour on the 25th of July at Boston's Pizza at 7pm on the patio. Come and have some fun!
We are in the process of planning the next semester. Elections are open and talk of non-profit status is buzzing about.
Join the mailing list to get in on the action!
Happy Hour on Friday -- Now Saturday
Zach
Due to popular demand because of the RedSeven party (which is allowed if you are under 21), we are moving the Happy Hour to Saturday at 7pm at Boston's Pizza.
I'm not sure how the turn-out will be because of the previous night's party, but lets try anyway and see what happens.
Boston's Pizza on University and Farmer at 7pm. Patio.
Happy Hour on Friday
Zach
This friday there will be a Happy Hour at Boston's Pizza on University and Farmer. We will meet there at 7pm.
This will be our 3rd monthly Happy Hour (Yay for regularity)
We will try and discuss some about this summer and what events we can have!
Also, the presentations from the InstallFest are now in the Howto section
InstallFest Spring 2008 Wrapup
Zach
That was a good InstallFest!
We had a total attendance of about 35 according to the signin sheet. I know a few people didnt sign in, so I'd say that was pretty successful.
9 New people were added to the list (and should receive this letter now)
I'd like to say thanks to all the presenters. The first-time guys were surprisingly good --Jesse. Also John was very information. Austin's presentation on virtualization was quite well done. Thanks to all!
We got many people installed with Linux, even a few that had vista and were skeptical.
I think there were about 7-9 new installs and 1 or 2 reinstalls. Almost all were Ubuntu, one Xubuntu and a Fedora. (Any others?)
I also want to thank John S and Natalie for helping out.
They put some good work into advertising.
Also, the flyer was Especially good this year! Let's make sure it's like that again. Thanks to all who put those up or made copies (Wayne etc)
We also took in about $80. I believe this is the first time the event acutally paid for itself! YAY!!!
Anyone have things to add?
___Look for more info on a possible summer event (InstallFest or something)___
Also, there will be a Happy Hour on the 25th at Boston's Pizza on University and Farmer on the patio. Look forward to that! It will be a good time to talk about what happened at the 'Fest and to Talk about this summer etc..

We now have an Official InstallFest Flyer that you may print and distribute where you'd like. Click the link below to get it:

This poster is curtosy of Natalie. She's real good with the Vector drawings. Thanks Natalie.
InstallFest Spring 2008
Zach
Hello Everyone,
With the MU burned down on the second floor, it was a little difficult to get through the process of getting a room for this semester's InstallFest. However, we have prevailed!.
The InstallFest will be held in the Brickyard Artisan Court (the building with the classrooms BYAC) room 190. It's on the first floor just around the corner from the elevators.
It already has tables and chairs that are movable and should have power and ethernet.
If you dont know where the Brickyard is, it's at Mill and 7th street. Once in the area with the fountain, we are in the building to the South-East corner. For parking, there is an underground parking garage which can be entered from 7th street. I'm not sure how much parking costs or if it's free on Saturday. I MAY be able to get some parking validation, but I can't promise anything. There is also metered parking which may or may not be free on Saturday.
Please bring powerstrips, extensions cords, ethernet cables, etc if you can. I'm not sure how much we will be provided with and It's always good to have extra. It could be the make or break on helping someone install.
This is also a GAMEFEST. Everyone / anyone can play games. Now is the chances. If you want to set up some servers for certain games or whatever, reply to this thread with ideas about which ones you want to play and who will bring a server. This could be real fun!
To recap:
What: InstallFest
Where: BYAC 190 (Brickyard)
When: April 19th ~10am - 5pm (earlier if you want to sign up)
Why: For fun
WHAT WE NEED:
*Volunteers to help with installing. Please email me and be sure to show up to help out.
*Advertising. We are going to try some extra advertising this year, but word-of-mouth and flyers in classrooms Alway helps.
*Funding / Donations. It's nice for us to be able to buy prizes and food for people. It would be awesome if we could get some good hardware to give away including whole computers.
*PRESENTERS: Anyone want to present something at the InstallFest? In the past we had some great presentations from people like Mark, Preston, John ...
*Game consoles: Last year consoles were a big hit too. Bring them if you can. We will be limited on projectors though. See Next
*Projectors: I'm not sure how many extra projectors ASU will provide us with. We might not get our usual 5. If you have an extra projector, please bring it.
Happy Hour (Meet and Geek) Tonight
Zach
There is a Happy Hour tonight (now called Meet and Geek) at the Bamboo Club near the Brickyard tonight (September 7th, 2007) at 7pm.
We'll be outside on the patio and should be there for several hours, so come on by!
InstallFest September 22nd
Zach
It's that time.. for the Semesterly InstallFest. We have several exciting things planned!
Where: Upstairs MU - Ventana room
When: September 22nd 10am - 7pm
Presentations:
John will be giving a presentation on Offline Wikipedia.
Preston will be giving a presentation on subversion.
We need:
Volunteers as installers. -- please volunteer by emailing me or
replying to the thread. Or other positions..
CD's for distro's. -- Does anyone have a library of distro's laying
around.. bring it! Or blank CD's or burn some distros to share.
Flyers -- Bryan, are you still good for giving us lots of copies?
Coolers for drinks -- Anyone want to bring a cooler to put the drinks
in? (ice too)
Cart -- Maybe a golf cart or rolling cart to carry things to/from
folk's cars. (wayne?)
Prizes -- we need door prizes and other stuff. These can be bought
with Donations
Food -- I'll buy food if we have enough Donations (probably will anyway..)
Donations -- please give us money. Linux is free. Help us get you all
together to enjoy it.
This can also be an official/unofficial GameFest. If you guys (i know
lots do) want to play games.. try and bring a server (if it needs
one). Or, ask us / someone here to bring a server with the game
already loaded etc. If you guys want console games (ddr, halo, etc,
whatever), then be sure to reply saying so, so that Someone brings a
console.
Spread the word! Show up! Lets try and make this one a good one. We
have some new people in the group -- lets try and show them a good
time.
How-Tos Added
John
The How-Tos section is back. It's broken up into three categories: ASU specific, presentations, and other.
The preference is to have few things in other and mainly ASU specific and presentations. This leads into the
second part of this post. We need presentations! If you would like to present on a topic at our next meeting
let us know what you want to talk about and what you will need. Anything Linux related if fair game.
Indeed...
Zach
Indeed there is a new website -- one which should server us well. Also, there are now google calendars to the left side of the screen.
This month, we will feature a list cleaning of our mailing list. Everyone will be removed and will need to readd themselves to the list through the Mailing List section on the left navigation bar. More information will be posted about that later this week.
Why you ask? We currently have over 200 members on the list, but not more than a dozen come to any one event or respond to being accounted for student records. ASU email accounts have been known for not bouncing messages once they're not used any more. This will help keep the list clean and fresh with people who actually exist and not old email addresses from a while ago.
20 Steps To Xen: A Quick Xen Tutorial For Ubuntu 7.04 x64 Server
Preston
From Preston (posted on the mailing list) For anyone looking to start playing with Xen on ubuntu, I have some instructions on my blog... http://www.prestonlee.com/archives/120
New Site
John
After many months of deliberation it was decided to replace the Lug web site with something new. Something a bit simpler. This decision was reached due to the old site having an entire content management system that was never used properly.
The main interaction in the Lug is through the mailing list with the site serving to give general information and for time and date announcements for the installfests. While the old site offered much above and beyond it was decided that the added features were not needed.
Through considerable discussion it the consensus was create a new, simple web site for the Lug. I was given this task and here it is. The release of the new site was decided to coincide with the cleaning of the list. Zach will detail that plan.
Mini-InstallFest Spring 2007
Zach
Hello Everyone. Due to lack of .. many things .. this semester, We will have a Mini-InstallFest instead of the normal sized large Fest. Place: GIOS (see link below..). GIOS is next to COOR hall and Sacks. There is a parking lot on the corner of Mill and University for it. -- Larger conference room inside. Look for signs
- Date/Time: April 28th 10am - 4pm
- FOOD: We will order pizza around lunch time.
