January 2019 Events

Hey ASULUG members,

Happy 2019! I hope everyone’s having a great start to the new semester. Here’s a rundown of what the club is going to be doing in the next few weeks:

  • Spring Involvement Fair is on Tuesday, January 15 from 11:00 to 1:30 at the Student Pavilion (near the Memorial Union). We’re going to have a table there and will be passing out flyers. Stop by and say hi if you go to the event!
  • Our first meeting will be the next day, Wednesday, January 16, in COOR 184, starting at 6 PM. We’ll come up with a list of ideas for topics to cover over the semester, answer questions about Linux, and also just hang out. There’ll be free pizza!
  • On the Wednesday after that (January 23), in COOR 184 at 6 PM, we’ll have a presentation about how to choose a Linux distribution (“distro”). (And more free pizza!) There are a lot of distros to choose from, and they differ widely in many ways. This will be in anticipation of…
  • The following Saturday (January 26) is when we’re holding this semester’s Installfest. It’ll be in COOR 184 from 11 AM to 5 PM. Bring your laptop or other computing device that you’d like to install Linux on, and we’ll help you do it! We’ll have some USB sticks with the most popular distros already loaded onto them, but please bring your own USB if you can (especially if you want to install one of the less popular distros). Also, free pizza again! We have that at every meeting.

We don’t yet have specific topics planned for the Wednesday meetings after that, but there’ll be a couple weeks or so of introductory presentations where we explain how to use your new operating system and what you can do with it.
