What is Linux?
According to Wikipedia, Linux (IPA pronunciation: /ˈlɪnʊks/) is a Unix-like computer operating system. Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free software and open source development; its underlying source code can be modified, used, and redistributed by anyone, freely.
What is a Linux User Group?
A Linux User Group (LUG) is a community based around the GNU/Linux computer operating system (OS). This group of people are themselves Linux users and pool their knowledge in order to help others in learning and using the OS. Generally, in the case of ASULUG, the group is non profit and run by volunteers. LUGs are local organizations proving help to Linux users in their area.
ASULUG's Purpose
ASULUG was created to provide a place for Linux users at Arizona State University (ASU) a way to collaborate and communicate with one another. It is an ASU sponsored organization that promotes and facilitates the spread of Linux at the University. Composed primarily of ASU students and alumni the group is in not a paid promotional unit nor a purchasing part of IT. This group if a collection of volunteers who give some of their time to help others in matters related to the GNU/Linux Operating System at ASU.
The Officers
Being an ASU club, the LUG is run by ASU students. There are currently three officers that oversee various parts of the group and who organize events. Spanning a range of majors from computer science to social science the officers, per ASU regulation, are currently attending students who are elected by other members of the LUG.
